Garden gates fitted and repaired in Norwich

City Garden Services fits new garden gates and repairs old ones across Norwich, from side gates on new builds to back gates onto shared alleys.

A gate that opens, closes and locks

A garden gate gets more use than any other part of a boundary. It is opened for the bins, the post, the dog and the children, and it takes the knocks. Over time hinges loosen, posts lean, the frame drops and the gate starts dragging on the ground or refusing to latch. A gate that will not close is not much use as security either.

We fit new timber side gates and garden gates to suit the opening and the fence around them, and we repair gates that still have life in them: rehanging on new hinges, packing and resetting posts, adding braces, trimming swollen frames and fitting new latches, bolts and locks. If the post is the problem, we replace the post rather than patching the gate.

City and new-build gardens often have tight side passages between houses, and a gate there needs to swing clear of meters, bins and steps. We measure the space and the direction of swing before suggesting anything.

Before you book

Things to decide first

  • Which way it opens

Gates beside a pavement should open into your garden, not out over the path. Think about bins, steps and meters on your side too.

  • How it locks

A latch you can open from both sides suits a garden gate. A side gate onto a street usually wants a bolt or lock on the inside.

  • Height and look

A side gate usually matches the fence beside it. A taller or solid gate adds privacy, while a lower open design keeps a front garden friendly.

  • Pets and children

If the gate needs to keep a dog or small children in, mention it. Gaps under and beside the gate, and a self-closing hinge, matter more.

How a gate job works

    Fitted and adjusted

The gate is hung, the posts set firm, and everything is adjusted until it swings and latches cleanly.

Worth knowing

Good to know

  • Most sagging is the post

If the post has moved, the gate drops however good the hinges are. A firm post is the first thing to check.

  • Braces run uphill

A diagonal brace should run from the bottom on the hinge side up to the top on the latch side, so it holds the gate up rather than letting it drop.

  • Timber moves with the weather

Gates swell in wet weather and shrink in dry spells. A small gap at the latch side allows for it.

  • Treat the wood

New timber gates last longer if they are treated or stained and the top edge is kept shedding water.

Questions

Garden gate questions

Something else you want to ask? Send us a message.

Can you fix a gate that drags on the ground?

Usually, yes. It may need new hinges, a straightened post or a brace. We will check the cause and repair the part that has failed.

Can you fit a gate in an existing fence?

Yes. We can create an opening in a fence run, set new posts either side and hang a gate to match.

Do you make gates to fit odd openings?

Yes. Side passages are rarely a standard size, so we measure the opening and fit a gate to suit it.

Can a gate open outwards onto the pavement?

It should not. Gates next to a public footway are expected to open inwards so they do not block or hit people walking past.

Can you fit a lock to my side gate?

Yes. We fit bolts, hasps for padlocks and gate locks, usually on the inside so the gate cannot be opened from the street.

Should I replace my old gate or repair it?

If the frame is sound and only hinges or posts have failed, repair it. If the timber is rotten through, a new gate is better value.
